Sex On My Mind

One of the reasons I started reading romance was for the sex. Yup, that's right! As a young impressionable teen I soaked up harlequins, some above the top historicals romances that had some skanky sex like Beatrice Small and Johanna Lindsey and even VC Andrews and those incest sex scenes between brothers and sisters- Flowers in the Attic anyone?
But as I grew older and more mature,(well, mature to a point)I have become bored with sex in general in romance. I still find myself looking through a book for that nice sex scene between the hero and heroine that usually happens about 150 pages in before I buy it. But overall, I am more concerned with the overall story and the path our hero and heroine must go through in order to have that HEA we all want for them. But this past year I have found that some authors have gone above and beyond with their creativity when writing an intimate scene. Up to about 5 years ago, I was shocked to see how graphic some romances have become. I honestly never though oral sex would be in mainstream romance. Now it is a norm and as accepted as a kiss or caressing. I also noticed, more so in ebooks than anything, more romance especially in gay themes ones of S&M themes one, some back door action is going on.
Backdoor action is not my cup of tea and the first author I read to do this and actually wasn't that squeamish was Sarah Mccarthy's ebooks. I started reading her a little over a year ago and when I read Promises Prevail I was blown away that a romance author would write a scene such as that? But she made it worked even thought I find it to be a bit taboo still.
Along with other taboo sex I am surprised by the amount of non-human sex going on. This year alone I have read about sex with dragons, demons, angels, um maybe ghosts also? (If you count Jane from Lover Unbound) But there was one book that totally shocked me and made me go ewwww... This book is a bit of an underwater adventure where the heroine has some over the top sex with the hero who transformers from a seal into a man. Now right there the whole seal thing make me think of Flipper, but when a tree actually has sex with the heroine, that's where I think we have gone past the point of no return. The book is Lord of the Deep by Dawn Thompson.
I have made my opinion known all over the place! I even had people start putting tree sex picture on my My Space page. **SHUDDER** And since I review daily on Amazon I also made my opinion heard loud and clear there. But since the majority of reviewers didn't seem to mind some tree loving, my review is missing.
Now, maybe it is just me but aren't some things just not to be written about sexually?
So how about we play a game? Can you come up with the most disturbing sex scene you have read in a romance? Or maybe you can make one up? As for me, sex with trees has to be the worst! You won't catch me in a forest anytime soon!

PS- I have some interesting tree sex pictures, but since Kristie is so sweet and innocent I wouldn't want to warp her mind (or yours) till she gives the okay ;)

Interesting question. As I’ve gotten my toes wet and I’m now between my ankles and my knees in romantica, I’ve thought about this myself – how much can I read before I start getting uncomfortable. It’s especially timely, this post, since I just picked up and started reading Caine’s Reckoning this morning. I think I judge how much I can take by how much, I’d be comfortable doing in real life. I was more adventuresome than Ron in that area so there is a few things we never got to try that I’ve wanted too. So when reading, if it’s something that vicariously appeals to me, it’s not to much. If it’s something that the thought of me trying it squicks me out then I have problems. That’s why I’m kind of torn about Caine’s Reckoning. It’s getting most excellent reviews and it’s a Western, which I adore. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that there is no ‘back door’ action so to speak, cause the thought of performing that act *shudder* – ah, hell to the no! But if there is, I just hope it’s kept to a minimum.
Since I’m only wet to the ankles, I can’s say there is anything disturbing I’ve read – well except for what I already mentioned and I realize that’s nothing by today’s standards.
And pics of tree sex *chuckle* even the thought of it is too weird. I don’t think I want to have to wash the eyeballs with bleach after seeing it :-0

I loved Caine's Reckoning, obviously. Um, I don't mind reading about a lot of different things. It doesn't mean I want to perform them. I read Joey Hill, but no way, uh uh, am I going to act out on that. Ew. No thanks.

ANd that dude on the cover of Lord of the Deep? Every single time I see that book I think he's eaten one can too many beans.

Hmmm...I'm trying to think of the most disturbing sex I've ever read. Though I have a lot of gay friends, it's very difficult for me to read m/m love scenes.

I've read books where the heroine has sex w/ her shapeshifter lover when he's a wolf or whatever (Nalini Singh comes to mind). That doesn't bother me at all.

The whole tree thing? I guess my mind automatically went to girl toys, but I can see how that would suck, especially with bark and other unmentionables...EW!!!! :(

Hmm, I don't remember Singh having the animals have sex. I know LKH was the first one I read where the guy went half wereanimal and I was a little creeped out.

I haven't gone that far into romantica yet. I know I need intimacy to be there between the H/H before they start with game playing in sex. That's the stumbling block I come across with today's 'hot' authors. They meet and 'bam' they are doing things they never thought they would. Uh, no. Not working for me.

I'm pretty sure I haven't read the 'back door' thing yet cause I'm sure I would remember that!

Sex with a tree. Gives a whole new meaning to loving mother earth. Blergh. Wonder what the squirrels thought ;)

I have big problems with the whole shpaeshifter thing. Sex with animals just does not do it for me. Ick. But sex with a tree? Wouldn't the branch hurt going in? Sorry, just had to ask...

And Lisabea, the comment about the beans was too funny!

LOL - it's that foaming water isn't it? You know those famous little ditties "Beans, beans, they're good for the heart..." or "Beans, beans the magical fruit..."

The most disturbing sex scene I think I've read (lately) was in Evangeline Anderson's Eyes of a Wolf or Like a Wolf or whatever. And it was't the tab A into slot B that bothered me. It was the discussion the father has with the mother about the future of the H/H. Gross. Ew. Yuck. Nasty. Yuck. Etc...

uh. there should be an "n" in wasn't

Tree sex? Okayyyyyy....

I think it's Rachel Bo who has a story where the heroine has sex with the hero and only he's in wolf form. It was.....interesting.

Although usually I can ignore the human/animal sex thing by thinking of shapeshifters as not animals. That helps.

The guy on the Lord of the Deep cover has a nice set of buns, to go with his beans! LOL Oh and also the heroine has sex on a sea sponge with the king of the seals underwater. Ewww seal....
Back when I was a big LKH fan and she started her Merry series, all I remember was one scene where Merry was trying to get it on with a demon or fairy that had multuiple tentacles and yeah... and also Prince of Ice with Emma Holly. The Prince is getting busy with the love of his life and in order to impregnate her, he grows a second wee wee to use while his first wee wee is in action. Um ,is that peni or penises?

Everyone's been blogging about sex this week! Bam's got Jess Michaels talking about it and Risky Regencies also have a post on it today.

My take on it is that just cos something's explicit, doesn't mean it's sexy. My only quibble with sex in books is when it's badly written, not what the content is. If it's well-written and consistent with what I think the characters would do, I'm happy with it.

I seem to recall that there were some interesting tree-sex pictures in the video Meljean Brook posted on Bam's site a few weeks ago....
