The ReRead Challenge for February

I know, I know - I'm a day early. But I'm having a couple of friends over tomorrow night and if you could see my house you would understand that I will be spending quite some time cleaning. Plus I got Promises in Death in the mail today so I'll be diving into that too! And since my books were read and my review(s) were written and Nath said I could, I decided to jump the gun.

Open Season by Linda Howard

I didn’t really plan on this one being the reread book of the month but I was in the mood for something light and something that would make me smile and this one worked the first few times I read so I knew it would probably do it again.

And it did.

Daisy Minor is the small town librarian. She celebrating her 34th birthday and she is not happy with her life. Her life is drab and unexciting and she hasn’t dated anyone for years. She still lives at home with her mother and aunt.

Then she has what she calls an epiphany and decides to change everything about her life. Open Season is about the changes she makes in her life and every time I read it, I find it delightful. Daisy is a librarian so that makes her a planner. As she also wants to meet a man and get married she comes up with the wackiest of plans. She gets herself a makeover; courtesy of Todd the (supposedly gay) Vintage furniture store owner. She moves out on her own and gets (not) a guard dog. So she has all her ducks lined up in a row but there is a fly in her ointment in the guise of Jack Russo, the chief of police. Jack is alternately annoyed, amused and finally turned on by Daisy and her small town prim and proper ways. He’s a hardened cop from the big city who worked on the SWAT team and is now ready for the slower pace of a small town.

Reading about these two fighting their attraction and fighting each other is delightful. NO ONE can do the kind of dialogue of an angry yet attracted guy better then Linda Howard whether it’s Sam from Mr. Perfect, Wyatt from To Die For/Drop Dead Gorgeous or Jack from Open Season.

There is one scene in particular when Daisy goes to the local drug store and picks up a certain item sure that the gossipy owner will let the town know what she is buying and thus letting everyone know she is ‘in the market’ and Jack shows up which is simply classic. Watching Daisy change from a ‘good girl’ to a ‘party girl’ is very amusing. Although pretty naive, she is not a TSTL heroine by any means.

And Jack is the standard yummy Linda Howard hero. She does have quite a way of writing them, that’s for sure.

There is also a mystery which Jack is trying to solve that involves Daisy.

I don’t know if our own SuperLibrarian has read this one or not. Being in ‘the biz’ I think she is tough on books with librarian heroines but I loved Daisy. I loved Jack. I loved Daisy and Jack together and I love this book. I think this is about the fourth time reading this book and it never fails to bring a smile to my face.

Grade: 4.5 out of 5

Next month I’m going to try and read something I haven’t read for years for the ReRead Challenge!

To Die For by Linda Howard

I was only planning on doing one reread this month. I lent To Die For, also by Linda Howard, to a girl at work and she loved it. When she brought it back, I threw it in my purse and the book and I had the following conversation over the next two days

To Die For: Read Me

Me: Look, I can’t read you. I’ve already finished my February Reread book and it was your cousin.

To Die For: Read Me

Me: I told you – I can’t. Look around. I have books in the bedroom to read, books in the second bedroom to read, books in the third bedroom to read. There are books in the kitchen, books in the living room, books in the ‘library; even books in the bathroom all saying the same thing.

I just don’t have time to read you. And if I’m not mistaken, I’ve probably already done a review for you.

To Die For: Read Me

Me: Stop it! I’ve read you already. In fact I think I’ve read you three times; the last time last August or something like that.

To Die For: Read Me

Me: Enough!!! Yes, I love you. I loved you the first time I read you. I loved you the second time. I know, I know – not everyone loves Blair Mallory as much as I do. She’s not everyone’s cup of tea. They think she’s a fluff bunny cheerleader who carries on too much, but I see her as a very savvy business woman who started her own business, a health club and she knows her own worth and expects and demands that Wyatt respect that. In fact she is one of my favourite funniest heroines.

And speaking of tea, I agree - you are a hawt one – that Wyatt is a sex machine who knows Blair’s weak spot.

And yes, yes I love Police Lieutenant Wyatt Bloodworth too – even though he had hurt Blair pretty good two years before when after the two of them had chemistry he stopped seeing her for no apparent reason and we don’t always forgive those kinds of heroes. But she made him pay for it. He’s a typical Howard hero – sexy as all get out, strong (he has to be to stay up with Blair’s machinations) and a great manly man. No pink tools for this macho man. And he is determined to find the person who is trying to get rid of Blair – permanently and that person will not be a happy camper let me tell you.

And true, this book is written in the first person and I normally don’t read first person books – at least I didn’t when I first read you. And the fact that it was first person didn’t bother me at all. And I will grant you that I can’t read this book without smiling and laughing in quite a number of places like when Blair and Wyatt first meet up at the murder scene and Blair pretends not to remember him, or the lists she’s constantly making of his faults. I love the fact that these are both very strong personalities and watching them battle for position is wonderfully funny.

But I just Don’t. Have. Time. End of story.

To Die For: Read Me

Me: You’re not going to give it a rest are you?

To Die For: Read Me, Read Me, Read Me, Read Me

Me: Alright (giving a heavy sigh) I’ll read you again. I hope you’re happy looking at all these other books – knowing I’m neglecting them.

Two Days Later

Me: There! Are you happy? I read you. I loved you. You made me laugh again. I loved Blair and Wyatt just as much as the first time and if you promise not to tell anyone, I’m glad you were insistent that I read you again. You get to keep that 5 out of 5 I gave you the first time I read you. And yes – I recommend you highly. Didn’t I just get you back from a coworker and she also loved you and we even talked about some of the real funny parts? So will you leave me alone now for at least a year now?

To Die For: I have a sequel

Me: Head – Meet desk.

Another huge haul - sigh

Sometimes I think the possession of book takes centre stage over the reading of books. I went on another book buying splurge - some on line and some at the store. Behold - my insanity

The Legacy by T J Bennet
This one received a DIK at All About Romance and the story sounded very good with a seldom used setting.

Falling in Love by Pauline Trent
The story sounded interesting; it's a new author; it's a good price - Sold!

Stranger by Megan Hart
This one sounded intriguing. I've been tempted a few times to get it and I finally succumbed. Now that I have 3 books by Megan Hart, I'll actually have to try one.

Promises in Death by J.D. Robb
The only author I buy in hardcover, I never get tired of Eve, Roarke and the gang.

Shadowed Knight by Jan Alyce Avery
I noticed this one Barbara's blog a while ago and put it in my shopping cart just waiting until I had enough for free shipping.

The Gunslinger's Untamed Bride by Stacey Kayne
Though both the title and the cover make me shudder, I really enjoyed the last book by her.

Theresa Weir

Although I didn't have all her books, all the ones I did have are either a five or 4.5. After rereading Bad Karma, I knew I had to get the ones I didn't already have. They include

Long Night Moon
The Forever Man
Iguana Bay

Forever
One Fine Day

Rosalyn West
After reading a good review of The Pretender at DA, I was reminded how many times I've read what great books these are.
The Rebel
The Pretender
The Outsider
The Outcast
I have one of these listed on my spreadsheet, but I'm not sure I still have it. I haven't seen it around in forever. And what good is it having 3 books without the fourth?

So there you have it - my most recent books buys - some by new to me authors, some by authors I've read and loved and one by an author whose books I have but haven't read yet.

See? It's insanity I tell you

AAR Poll Results

Well - the results are in for the Annual 2008 All About Romance Reader Poll. What was interesting was how many I read. It's always fun to compare what I voted for to what won. For the first time since I started voting in it, I didn't spread my votes out. So what about anyone else? Did you vote? How do they compare?

Etc. time

Am I the only one who gets excited over the oddest of things???? This is going to sound very bizarre but in the world of toilet paper there was one brand I refused to buy. And that one was Charmin. I hate – absolutely loathe their commercials. I mean they have baby bears taking a poop for goodness sake!! How can anyone buy toilet paper with that kind of commercial running through their mind.

But the other day my cheapness won over my boycott of products with terrible commercials when the Charmin was on for a price I just couldn’t resist. And you know what?? It’s a really good toilet paper. And I mean really good! Soft and strong and well – without going into any details – I need a lot less. In that old Seinfeld episode – one square to spare would have been more than enough.

So – there you have it. I’m excited over toilet paper.

Montana Wild by Stacey Kayne

Why this one: I’m not really sure other then it was a Western and I was in a mood for a Western

Steam Level: Warm but you don’t have to worry about burning your tongue

From Author’s Website:

A promise from his past threatens what Chance values most...his freedom

Cora Mae Tindale isn’t looking to stir up trouble—she just needs a safe place to hide while she plans out her future. Having escaped the marriage trap set by her conniving mother, she’s arrived in the wilds of Wyoming searching for the stepbrother who promised to always protect her. She hadn’t counted on the boy from her childhood becoming a war-hardened rancher with heart-stopping looks that could tempt a saint.

Plagued by horse thieves and marriage-minded females, the last thing Chance Morgan needs is a woman on his ranch. But Cora Mae is more than just a pretty face—she’s part of his past; a reminder of the guilt and broken promises he’s spent too many years trying to forget. A distracting array of curls and curves, she hardly resembles the mischievous spitfire from his youth, but her eyes hold the shadows of a painful past, and a passion she struggles to conceal. Cora Mae’s indifference entices Chance in a way that blatant flirtation never could. He yearns to discover the truth she hides, but will uncovering her secrets expose his own?

My thoughts: This book is why I love Westerns and why I am grateful Harlequin still publishes them and why I wish other publishers would get back on the Western bandwagon in a bigger way.

Cora Mae and Chance (along with his twin brother Tucker who has his own story in a previous book which I am now going to have to track down) knew each other in childhood. Chance’s father was married to Cora Mae’s mother – a wicked witch if ever there was one! It’s so bad Chance and Tucker have to get away from her and join their father in the war even though they are only 12. They feel bad having to leave Cora Mae behind with her evil mother but there is no choice. They promise to come back for her though. This was all covered in the prologue

Then the book starts years later. Chance and Tucker are the owners of a thriving ranch and Cora Mae has just arrived to see them after all these years. She runs into Chance and sparks fly though Chance is equally suspicious that Cora Mae is working for her evil mother.

It’s refreshing to read a book with no Dukes; no Earls; no Britshness in sight. I love books with ‘working’ heroes.Chance makes a fine hero. He’s equally suspicious and attracted to Cora Mae.

And I really liked Cora Mae. She had a horrible childhood with her mother yet made a good life for herself once apart from her mother. But once her mother gets involved with her life, Cora Mae is on the run and runs to the two people who were her best friends from childhood.

There’s nothing spectacular about this book, instead it’s a book about two people who have a history of good memories coming together.

Although this is the second book in a series I didn’t have much problem following it. Stacey Kayne is a new-to-me author and one who I will definitely read again.

Grade: 4 out of 5

Sharing the Love

I’ve mentioned before how much I like working where I do. I’ve recently found another unexpected bonus – turning readers into romance readers! Yes – I’ve been able to share some of my books with some coworkers. It started with Janet Evanovitch. I overheard one of the case managers telling another case manager how much she enjoyed Ms. Evanovitch’s books. Of course I jumped into the conversation. As I have a number of her books – including a three-in-one of One For the Money, Two For The Dough, Three to get Deadly, I brought this one in. The case manager loved it and managed to all 14 in about 2 months – she agreed with many reviews I’ve seen that Fearless Fourteen wasn’t as good as the earlier ones.

Since she loved them so much and we discussed them at work in front of others, they got curious too and wanted to try them. One other coworker is now on the 8th book and another one is on book 2. I look forward to many great discussions.

And if that isn’t grand enough, there is another coworker who took out Lisa Kleypas’ Blue-Eyed Devil from the library because I had told other people I work with about it. She wasn't exactly a romance fan but she was curious. And she loved it. But she hadn’t read Sugar Daddy first. So with some trepidation I lent her my copy. My reluctance was due to the fact that Lisa sent it to me personally and autographed it for me. I would have cried if something had happened to it. But I did trust this coworker and all was good as she loved it too and wants to read Smooth Talking Stranger after me once it comes out.

Since she loved the Lisa Kleypas books so much I tried to think of another book she might like and came up with To Die For by Linda Howard. I warned her though that many other readers didn’t like Blair – even though I adore her.

Well – my coworker loved it too and now wants to read Drop Dead Gorgeous. The only problem is she is a casual employee and I don’t see her every day. She left To Die For on my desk on a day off and I haven’t seen her since. But I’m looking forward to seeing her again so we can talk about it.

All of this is rather unusual for me. I have one friend who reads a lot of romance books I loan her – and she realizes how important they are and takes proper care – but she’s not at all into ‘discussing’ them. The most I can get out of her is I loved them. She takes about 7 or 8 at a time and by the time I get them back, she doesn’t really remember that much – whereas me on the other hand can still remember many a book I read over 10 years ago.

So it’s unusual to be able to talk face to face with someone about the romance books we’ve read and for me – a large part of the fun of reading is talking about it after. That’s why I visit romance message places and LOVE blogging. I love sharing the books I’ve loved and in return reading about books other bloggers have loved. After being on a romance reader island for so long, where there was no one to talk about them with, discovering this wonderful online community has changed my world.

And now that I’m starting to find a few people in my work place – it’s just wonderful.

Does anyone else feel this way? After years of being frustrated at not being able for example to share what makes Blair Mallory such a hoot, or who to choose – Joe or Ranger (Joan – the one who has now read the whole series is a Ranger fan) or what a great hero Hardy turned out to be, do you feel that your life is now enriched because you have someone – either online or in person to share this special love with now?
