So far so good!!

I've become a mean lean reading machine since the beginning of the year. All right, all right, lean is something I'm not. And if asked to describe myself in one word, mean isn't the first word that comes to mind. But I have become a reading machine. I usually start out rather slow at the beginning of a new year but already I've read six books. Last year I think it was towards the middle of February before I read that many. And in light of all the books I have read so far, I rewarded myself with - what else - a trip to Chapters! My latest buys are on the right.

But all is not good. I read Reese, the first book in the Rock Creek Six series - thinking after reading the final book first, I should read the first one next. I really enjoyed it and will have the review coming soon. The next book up after that is Sullivan and it's the one that's gone missing. I've been forced to do something I don't often do. I've had to hunt - high and low - for the book - and so far no luck in finding it!!!

Arrrrggghhhh!!! I know I have it. It's in the spreadsheet. It's listed in my LibraryThing. It's in Shelfari and Goodreads. That means I've listed it in four different places do damn it all - it's here - in the house - somewhere. So of course the longer I look for it, the more I want it. So thus begins..........

The Search for Sullivan

It's not in the 'library'. At least I haven't seen it. It's not in the living room. At least I haven't seen it. It's not in the bathroom. At least I haven't seen it. It's not in the computer room. At least I haven't seen it. Though I did find a missing bag of jewellry. And I still haven't finished in that room. I still haven't looked in the other two bedrooms. I found all the fridge magnets I collected in Washington that kind of disappeared. I found all my pens. But I haven't found Sullivan.

So here's hoping I find Sullivan. I shall be unbearable to live with if I don't. But in the meantime, until I find Sullivan, I shall keep reading!! Not Sullivan - as he's gone missing - but I have others that will keep me company until I find him.

Not just a Twofer - but a Threefer!!

As Nath reminded me, Chapters had a 25% weekend this weekend just wrapping up. I wasn't going to get any books, but the more I thought about it, the more I justified to myself that it was a good idea to go. And with just a very short encouragement from Stacy, I did.

Born of Fire and Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Now I gave up the Dark Hunter series quite some time ago. But I was actually on the Sherrlyn Kenyon train years before even then, when I was into futuristics and read a couple of hers and enjoyed them quite a bit. I read somewhere that they were going to be reissued but lost track of when. Then I read at Leontine's place that Born of Ice was one of them. When I checked online to see if the Chapters near me not only had this one but also Born of Night - well I had to get them right? I already have Paradise City - now I'm going to have to figure out which one it is and how it compares to the reissued version.

I read about this one Stacy's place and was instantly intrigued. But I'll be honest, I find the cover cringe worthy. But I figured if I bought a group of books and with luck the checkout person was female and not some young studly guy, I could slip it through. I did and it wasn't so all was good!

Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind by Karen Kelley
I really enjoyed Earth Guys are Easy, the second in a trilogy and I picked up Bad Boys Guide to the Galaxy, the third a few days ago. So I just had to get the first one - right?

How to Tempt a Duke and How to Tame a Lady by Kasey Michaels.

Now I have both of these in my cart at Harlequin but there I save 20% off the cover price. With my Avid Reader card I say 10% and 20% is better then 10%. But 25% is even better then 20%. So by getting them today at Chapters, I'm saving a total of 10% - 5% on each book. See how that math works? In fact, by that kind of math, I actually saved 90% on the books I bought!!
And in case you are wondering, I actually credited the savings because I would have saved 10% at Chapters regardless.

Putting Aside All Others

So - it was a great book day today. I stopped at the bookstore on the way home - the one not really near me, but on my route home - and picked up Blaze of Memory by Nalini Singh, Ain't to Proud to Beg by Susan Donovan and Skin Game, the one Rosie loved, by Ava Gray (aka Ann Aguirre).

And when I got home, my Chapters order had arrived. It included The Countess Lends a Hand by Bonnie Dee, Paradise Rules by Beth Kery - and.........Kindred in Death. Which brings me to the reason for this post. I'm currently reading two books, one so so and the other one which is pretty good.

But! I laid aside all other books in order to dive into Kindred in Death. I do this with each and every new In Death book. It doesn't matter what I may be reading - even if the book is un-put-downable, I put it down for Eve and Roarke and the gang. And it made me wonder if anyone else has a certain author or series that they will put everything else aside in order to read it.

It's not that every single In Death book is a 5 out of 5. But there is just something about this series that pulls me in to the exclusion of all else.

So what about anyone else - do you have something that rises to the top no matter what?

I finished reading Meredith Duran's Bound By Your Touch yesterday (review to come soon!) and loved it so much, I had to check and see if her next book, Written on Your Skin was in the store and low and behold it was!! So I just had to get it to read up on Phin's story. So while I was there I got a couple I missed in DC.

Dilemma's Drive me Crazy

I've been on a book buying ban and so far I've been doing pretty darn good! The only one I've bought since I met with Nath, Cindy, Lea and Mary (and Ames via Web Cam) is Stacey Kayne's newest, Mountain Wild. But with the coming of July and the release of some really good books, I have to decide whether I'm going to give in or not. There are quite a few that I'm hankering for and I have a gift certificate from Chapters. I've checked and they are in the store. I've done my research and the authors of some of them won't be at the RWA conference so now I have to decide whether to get them or not.

Of course it's a forgone conclusion that I will. But still, it's a dilemma. Because it's not like I don't have enough books and will be getting many more in LESS THEN 10 DAYS!











None of these authors are listed on the literacy signing so I think it's safe to say they won't be there and I can do some book buying this afternoon!!

Now one might think I got this one because of the chest - and one would be wrong. When I was much younger, I used to collect decks of playing cards with ships on them. I love ships. I have a ship collection in the 'Library'. So it was the ship in the background that made this one stand out and call my name. Really. It was. It was the ship I say - not the chest. And not the chain that's resting on the chest. Nope - not the smooth chest with puckered nipples. Nope - it is the ship!

Now chances are when I start reading this one, I will smack my head, remember it, go down to the 'Library' and there it will be - in an older release. But I stopped on the way home and the back blurb really didn't ring a bell - and it IS a Linda Howard - though an older one to be sure.

Tempted All Night by Liz Carlyle

I was one of the original Liz Carlyle fans. And I'm proud of that fact. I first discovered her upon the release of her very first book, My False Heart. And I kept up with her, but I really wasn't fond of One Little Sin, Two Little Lies or Three Little Secrets - though the covers were gorgeous. And then because I'm shallow - but it's not the chest - I didn't like the titles of Never Deceive a Duke, blah, blah, blah.
But I think it's time I try her again!! She used to be one of my favourite authors and hopefully she will regain her place with this one.







Heart's Delight by Ruth Ryan Langan

Now I have a feeling I may have this one though it's not listed on my spreadsheet. But it's a Western, it was on for a real good price, the storyline sounded kind of fun and I sort of like the trees in the background. No, not the naked chest with the guy wearing a cowboy hat pulled low over his face - nope - it's the trees.
Oh, and the yellow sky and yellow and green lake. That's kind of cool too.

To all my American friends - you're president........ well I don't want to get into a political rant, but this news item just cracked me up!!!!

TOYAKO, Japan (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush on Monday kept up his tradition of informal relations with fellow world leaders by summoning Prime Minister Stephen Harper with a brusque "Yo Harper!"

Bush and Harper, a rather stiff and shy figure, are in northern Japan for a summit of leaders of the Group of Eight major industrialized countries.

Television footage of a G8 lunch with African leaders showed Bush talking to Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua and saying "Yo Harper! The president of Nigeria."

At a G8 summit in 2006, Bush landed ally Tony Blair in some trouble by calling out "Yo Blair!"

Critics said the greeting showed what they described as the unequal nature of Bush's relationship with Blair, then the British prime minister.

And at the same summit, Bush shocked German chancellor Angela Merkel by briefly massaging her back as he walked behind her chair.

Harper's ties with Bush are sensitive, since critics of Canada's right-wing Conservative government regularly accuse it of taking orders from Washington.

It was not the first time that Bush has surprised Harper in public. In July 2006, after the two men met at the White House for the first time, Bush publicly called the Canadian "Steve."

Analysts said at the time this might actually help Harper dispel questions about the closeness of his relationship with Bush, since no one who even slightly knew the somewhat wooden Canadian leader would ever think of him as "Steve."

Bush has since referred to Harper in public as "Stephen."

Asked for a reaction to the "Yo Harper!" comment, Harper's spokeswoman said she had not been at the lunch.

Now Stephen Harper has disappointed me as PM. He's quite a cool (and I don't mean that in a groovy kind of way) rather distant person - though that's not what I find disappointing. So to imagine Bush hailing him as Yo, Harper really tickled my funny bone!

And in other news - as of last Sunday - I've stopped buying books!
No, no, no - not for good. That will NEVER happen. I've just stopped buying them until I get to San Francisco. As one of the BIG draws is books, books, hundreds of wonderful book - I don't want to have them all before I get there. So for the time being I've banned myself from Chapters. It will be tough, but I KNOW I can do this - I hope.

What I won't do for The Crusade!

Well, if the maybe crusaders won't come to us, we will go to them *g*.
I knew Cindy had a copy of North and South and a few weeks ago I let Krisite out of her cage long enough to email Cindy with a "Say, I have a great idea" kind of email. She lives about an hour and a half away it's become one of my favourite things to do to go visit her. Right from the start we had an instant bond in our love of romance books. The Chapters near her has a great romance section and I get to drive Real Fast on the highway.
So in my email, I said wouldn't it be a great idea for me to come for a visit and we could watch North and South - never a hardship for me. As well as the pluses I just mentioned, it would get me out of house hell for a while. I'm headed into my fourth week with no kitchen and as well as kitchenless, since they took it back right to the studs, there is now a fine line of dust on EVERYTHING. Add to that my computer woes and it was just about time for me to get away for a while. Cindy also thought it was a grand idea. She even invited me to spend the night - which meant we could feast on the whole of North and South in one go since it's four hours altogether.
She cooked a Wonderful Meal - she must have read my mind that Prime Rib is one of my all time favourites. I even hugged her kitchen counter as it was so nice just seeing one again.
So, after a trip to Chapters (books I bought to follow), a delicious meal, we got into our pj's and settled down for some Prime viewing. I think she's going to post her thoughts on N&S soon. And if early indications are correct, she will be moving from Maybe Crusader to Crusader - but I'll let her let everyone know.
For me though, it was viewing paradise. See, her and Bob have a 52 inch either Plasma or HD television. I'm afraid I don't really know the difference. I meant to ask but forgot. But the point is, what a heck of a difference it made!! I've been watching it on my (what now seems tiny) 27 inch screen. Mind you the surround sound is very nice - all the better to hear his fabulously deep, oh so sexy voice. But to watch the whole thing on a big screen, and that final train scene - total bliss!!!
In order to let her see the total scope of his acting abilities, I also brought Robin Hood where he is the magnificently evil, but totally sexy Guy of Gisbourne and The Vicar of Dibley (courtesy of someone wonderful) for his adorableness.
We watched an episode of Robin Hood but he wasn't in it that much. But hopefully she got a taste. And then today we watched The Vicar of Dibley. I'd seen the first episode - The Handsome Stranger earlier, but I hadn't seen the second one. I must say the British have wicked sense of humour! They were both a riot.
Later we took a quick trip to IKEA where I stocked up on glasses for my hopefully done soon kitchen shelves.
It was a fabulous break from my stress of the moment life. When I got back home though I was once again thrown back into it as the furnace had quit again while I was away and it was a balmy 7 degrees Celsius in the house. That would be roughly44 degrees Fahrenheit. Brrrrr. I called the furnace people and someone showed up to fix it and it's about 15 degrees now.
Now I'm wondering if a trip to England is in order.

Partner Katiebabs has been raving about this one and even though it's a vampire romance & normally don't read them, her praise has been so high I thought I'd give it a try.









Die For Me by Karen Rose
Ames really loves her books. I just finished Count to Ten and quite enjoyed it so I was looking for more from this author. Unfortunately this was the only other one they had.










Destiny's Warrior by Heather Walters
I've never heard of this author and I don't think this book is in the Chapters near me. Since I'm always willing to try new authors and the premise sounded interesting, I thought I'd give this one a try.









His and Hers by Dawn Calvert
Same kind of reasoning with this one as Destiny's Warrior. Plus the price is pretty good. This one is a time travel and I'm always willing to read one of them.









Tumbling Through Time by Gwyn Cready
For the third time, this is a new author, haven't seen it my local Chapters and it sounded interesting. It's also a time travel. And the shallow me thinks the shoes the model is wearing are very nice and I wish I wore heels.









His Favourite Mistress by Tracy Anne Warren.
The first book in this series got very good reviews - I think - and while I have it, I haven't read it. As good a reason as any to get a book. Besides, Cindy had six books so *chuckle* I had to get six.









And because I have sound back again and this means YouTube is back in my life again, I will leave this for all the Crusaders

Now - I have to confess I haven't read Sugar Daddy yet. I shall have to now. I'm looking forward to reading Sugar Daddy!

Now the funny thing is I got a notice from Chapters the other day apologizing to me for not being able to have to books to me before Dec. 25. Quite a difference from the hassels I've had with Harleqin let me tell you!

The funny thing was I didn't remember ordering them. I did, I know I did but with everything going on, it slipped my mind. So besides the above to look forward to, I also have these two:

I'm still thanking those at DA for their fun promotion of her first book. I've read them all now and really liked them. It's a fascinating world Ms. Singh has created. Besides that when I met her, she is such a nice person, I'd get her books anyway :)

And now after this brief intermission - back to packing (blech!) And I still have so much to do here!! More reviews, Katie and I have another Duo Review planned - I just have to my part. Sigh

Neither Rain, Nor Sleet Nor Dead of Night - Not Even a Snowstorm

Moving away (very reluctantly) from North and South, one of the best things about the last week of the previous month and the first week of the next month for us romance readers is........New Books. I've become more of an investigator in the past year. I've discovered this great website that lists upcoming books. I make a mental list of the ones that appeal to me and then start checking the Chapters web site to see if they are in stock. This month was no different even if I did have other things on my mind *g*.

I noticed that the reissue of Lord of Scoundrels was in stock at the Chapters near me. This one is back on my radar since it came in #1 on the AAR poll and a few recent bloggers have just discovered it for the first time. I read it years ago and my copy is pretty banged up now from all the times I've reread it. So of course when I saw it was being rereleased I HAD to get it. Didn't I? Of course I did! I didn't have a chance to pick it up on the weekend but today at work, while a snowstorm was raging outside, I decided today was the day!

There are are two main ways I can get home from work, the quick way, or the slower way which takes me right by Chapters. I chose the slower way. With bated breath I entered the store and went right to the C's. Rats!!! It wasn't there. Darn it all. Luckily though there were two other books I'd planned on getting so it wasn't a complete waste of time.

I happily picked up Parellel Desire by Dierdre Knight and Redeemed In Darkness by Alexis Morgan. I was still quite disappointed though that Lord of Scoundrels wasn't there.

Now there are two ways I can get home from Chapters. The quick way, or the slower way where I can cut through the mall which just happens to have a Coles book. Since I was researching Lord of Scoundrels, I knew they had two copies at Coles. Again, I chose the long way. It's a much smaller store. I headed towards the C's with fingers crossed and Taaa Daaa.

I'm now the happy owner of three new books I've been waiting for.

Not even a snow storm can stop this romance reader!! Now all I have to do is find the time to read them!

The title is rather odd, but her books are terrific!



Now it should be noted that of the Chapters purchase, the only one out now is Creation in Death, but in order to get free shipping, you have to order a certain number and it doesn't matter when they come out. I like that feature.

Lisa tells me I buy to many books. I'll never tell her this, but I think she may be right!
