Recent Movies watched

I don't do a lot of movie reviews because - well - I don't watch a lot of movies. I go to the show maybe once or twice a year and I never seem to think to watch them on TV. And to be honest, while I like A Lot of books - I'm quite picky on the movies I see. So this is a rare kind of post.

I mentioned that I had a friend come over on Saturday night. She brought a movie with her. When I saw which movie she brought I was a bit apprehensive. It's taken until today until I can blog about it.

P.S. I Love You

While others had been raving about this movie since it first came out, for obvious reasons I avoided it. But I heard how great it was and how just about everyone had seen it and I thought I was ready. I had heard that Gerry (Gerard Butler) dies at the beginning of the movie and then it was about Holly moving on. But it wasn't what I was expecting. Yes, it is about Holly moving on, but there were many flashbacks on Gerry and Holly, how they met, how they lived, how they loved. And I found it very, very hard to watch. I was in tears through much of it. There was the scene where Holly played the voice mail over and over just to hear his voice. I did the same thing. There was a scene where she was sleeping and when she woke up, she imagined she felt Gerry lying right there beside her and I've done the same thing. There was the scene where she was boxing up his things - I've yet to do that.
She just sat there alone in their apartment and lost her job. That happened to me. And then there was one scene where if I had been alone, I would have been sobbing. I was wanting to show it, but all the videos have been disabled but it's the scene where he has told her in a letter that she has to get up on stage again and sing karaoke. The song she sings when it's just him she sees in the audience just about broke my heart.
When the movie was over, I had a hard time talking and my friend felt bad that she brought it. But even though it made me cry - I think parts of it probably made a lot of people cry - I was really glad I watched it. It IS a wonderful movie. There are a lot of cutesie romantic comedies that leave me cold but this isn't one of them.

Gerard Butler did a wonderful job as a full of life, full of fun, Irish guy named Gerry. If I wasn't already so gone for Richard Armitage, he could probably be right up there on my 'lust for him' list. Well - in fact he is - but RA is still numero uno. What a different role then the one he played in both The Phantom and 300!
And Hilary Swank as Holly was also great. As the sober, feet on the ground one of the two, she played the part remarkably well. And I so could relate to so many of the things she went through.
The supporting cast was excellent too. Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Bates, Harry Connick Jr. et al were all smashingly good.

Grade: 4.5 out of 5

I loved this movie, too. I'm glad you were able to watch it, and I hope that it helped a little, and didn't just make you cry. That Gerard is one hottie, no?

Lori: Oh yes - yes he is!! And it was nice seeing him in a romantic type movie - even though......
And I loved him in The Phantom.
I haven't seen that many Hilary Swank movies. I started watching Million Dollar Baby but had a feeling it was going to end sad - so I went to bed. And I really liked Freedom Writers.

OMG, I watched this one not long ago. The hubby was at work, the kiddies were asleep and there I was balling my eyes out on the sofa.

Oh and Gerard...sigh...I agree with Lori he was so good in Phantom. I wanted him to get the girl. Ugh, smokin' hot.

OK, let me just explain: I couldn't help it!!!!! I cried almost the entire way through this movie! I think I wiped out a box of tissues. I watched it with one of my brothers on New Year's Eve (actually New Year's Day), and he teased me about it, saying that he'd look over at parts of the movie that weren't even sad and I'd be all choked up and blubbering.

A very touching movie. Thanks for the review, Kristie.

That movie actually moved me. It's a movie that left me sad, but also left me awed by it's beauty. It left me feeling torn up and bruised. I felt like it was not just about moving on, but a testament to how love doesn't die overnight simply because a person did.

I'm amazed you had the courage to watch it after having lived it. I'd give you a hug if I could!

I avoided this movie, too, for all the reasons you mentioned, but when I finally did see it, I loved. It was gentle and very life-affirming. It's on my keeper shelf now, LOL. I loved Gerry in Phantom of the Opera, and if you haven't seen him in "Dear Frankie," you might enjoy that movie as well.

If you haven't read the book yet, Kristie, I think it's even MUCH better than the movie. I think you would like Cecelia Ahern's books in general because there's always a romance and a touch of fantasy/supernatural. I like her work a lot. I think my favorite is IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW, which I hear was optioned for a movie. Hugh Jackman was supposed to star in it, but I don't know if the movie deal is still in the works.

Barbara: it's an easy movie to make you cry isn't it? But still - I liked it.

Pamela: I bet your brother was crying on the inside and wouldn't admit it and teased you to cover up. I'm not normally a crier - but that movie surely did it for me.

Anna: I'm not sure I'll watch it again - I always prefer happier movies - but I am glad I watched it. And thanks - but it's Ames who's been working on the new look.

Sula: I can see that *g* I never would have watched it on my own. I normally prefer movies that don't make me cry.

Lea: Though I prefer movies that don't make me cry - if I know it will and if I know the end - I can usually prepare myself somewhat. But this one did catch me unawares because I thought GB would only be in it at the beginning. I didn't realize there would be a lot of flashback.
And again - Ames get the credit :)

AL: It did - until the end when she said she couldn't 'feel' him anymore. I still feel Ron a lot. I hope I never loose that.

Mina: There was one part that kind of made me angry - when her mother told her it was time to get over his death and move on. That is so wrong to tell a person who has lost a loved one because we are all different and deal with things in our own time - not when other people think we should.

Lisa: Dear Frankie eh? Hmmm - I shall have to investigate that one. And I did like the movie - quite a bit. It was very emotional though.

Karen W: I will look for her books. It would be interesting to compare the movie to the book. Most of the time the books are better aren't they?

The first time I watched this I was a little underwhelmed by it. I liked it, but didn't love it. It still made me cry, but that's actually not saying all that much!

I did however watch it a few days again for what is probably the third or fourth time, and I appreciated it a lot more than I had previously. I don't normally rate Hillary Swank, and the very last line with Kathy Bates still annoys the crap out of me, but other than that I enjoyed it a lot more this time
