Confessions at Midnight by Jacquie D'Alessandro

I have always been a big fan of Jacquie D’Alessandro’s historical romances. They are fun and very sexy. I just finished Confessions at Midnight and it was another great read by this author, but with a few problems. One problem is yet another mystery that has to be solved. Usually this involves either the hero or heroine. Both are involved indirectly. It seems our hero’s old mistresses or lovers are being killed. And now his new lover, Carolyn may be the next one on the killer’s list. And then you have the TSTL moment toward the end of the book when our heroine knows she is in danger, but OH, she receives a note from the hero and must meet him in his middle of the night somewhere in the open. Heh.

Other then these two issues, Confessions at Midnight was lovely. This is the second book about a group of four friends who come together to chat about books. But, they want to read those naught books such as their newest read called Memoirs of a Mistress by An Anonymous Lady. Carolyn is a widow of three years and had a wonderful marriage with Edward who she still loves and misses. Two things I thought were great was the fact that Carolyn is in her early thirties that there was no evil first husband or he couldn’t “get it up” for his dear wife. Carolyn enjoyed their time in the bedroom, but after reading the Memoirs, she realizes they didn’t have the hot and scorching sex that is talked about. And now she is oh so lonely and feels empty without having a man to touch her. But she feels horrible because she thinks her feelings are against everything she ever had with Edward.

Daniel, our hero, was friends with Edward and always had feelings for Carolyn. He actually saw Carolyn first but because Edward was interested in Carolyn, Daniel stepped aside. Daniel has a reputation with the ladies, but he is really a good guy, so good in fact that he rescues abused animals. Perhaps a bit too good to be true. Daniel wants Carolyn, and badly. But just for an affair, oh no, not for live because that is not in his cards.

You can imagine what happens next between these two. And let me tell you, their first intimate scene was one of the best I have read in a long time. There is no actual sex involved, but Daniel is very, very giving and what happens between Carolyn and Daniel in that one scene was everything I would love forward to, especially in a romance of this nature. These two characters talk and communicate along with having a very mature love affair.

Haven’t read a good historical in a long time? I recommend Jacquie D’Alessandro and her latest, Confessions at Midnight.

I liked this book as well. This is the first book of hers I have read. Daniel had such a dry sense of humor. His "I can't imagine." Each time Samuel said "Ye'll never guess wot milord." Cracked me up every time! I liked Daniel and Carolyn alot as well as the secondary characters.

Katie(babs)~I've been such a fan of her books, but I cannot get into this one for love or money. Sigh. I need to put away the tree sex and read this one.

I have been debating on this series and now I think I might have to check her out. I heard she was a great historical romance writer but I balk at series simply b/c I am already reading way too many.
Thanks for the tip!

Kim: I can't wait to read Emily's story and who her hero will be ;)

Lisabea: Put down the forest sex! Your mine is being warped. Yuk. What type of tree was it?

Sarai: When you have the chance I recommend you start reading this one. The first one is about Carolyn's sister Sara- Sleepless at Midnight

Stacy: You say the most wodnerful things. LOL

I've read both the books and enjoyed them both as well. And you're right, there were a couple of TSTL moments there, but the overall enjoyment of her books is great.

Just finished this last week and enjoyed it. Agree about that final TSTL moment -- why would she think Daniel would want to meet her in the open at that hour of the day rather than at one of their houses? OTOH, I enjoyed Daniel's menagerie of crippled pets and rescued servants and the banter between the H/H. Also liked that Carolyn had a VG relationship with her sister and had loved her first husband. It made her willingness to engage in a relationship with Daniel more believable than the usual "virgin into sex goddess in one fell swoop" scenario. One minor quibble with the review: Daniel didn't see her before Edward did; the first time he saw her and found himself falling in love was at the party where Edward and Carolyn announced their engagement. In that it was a bit like Julia Quinn's "When He Was Wicked".
