Book 1 of 2009

Wicked Burn by Beth Kery

Why this one: When I saw the review Stacy gave this book, I knew I'd have to give it a try

Steam Level: Can one blush when by oneself? Yes, one can - this one was THAT hot, at least for me!

Author Website Blurb: He wanted all of her…

Vic Savian knows what he wants when he sees it. And what he wants is his sexy neighbor, Niall Chandler. So when he sees her in the hallway of their building being harassed by an aggressive suitor, Vic makes his move—and finds himself greatly rewarded…

And did she ever let him have it…

Sleeping with her gorgeous neighbor—when she didn’t even know his last name—was the craziest thing Niall’s ever done. Now, she can’t seem to get enough of Vic—or the uninhibited passion he stirs in her. Suddenly, with his help, she’s opening to sensual pleasures she’s never known before. But when Niall’s past comes back to haunt her, will she and Vic let themselves venture beyond the bedroom and explore the possibility of love that’s in their hearts?

My Thoughts: First off - I should warn you that I'm under the influence of two Irish Coffee's. I'm going to put this one in draft and see tomorrow morning if I'm too much under the influence. *g*

I was reading this one the other morning before work and when it was time to leave, I looked at it, laughed, and thought 'I can't take this too work with me!! What if someone wants to see what I'm reading and opens it where I've left the book mark!! My reputation will be ruined.' You see - the cover is rather tame - but the inside - Wowzers!! I was just reading the scene (for anyone who has read this one) where Vic had tied Niall up with his belt to the bedpost. (always an unrealized fantasy of mine - oops TMI!!)

Anyway - I'm relatively new too this level of hawtness in a book. But I'd just like to say I can get used to it - oh yes I can!!

Vic Savian is a famous playwright. He has noticed his beautiful neighbour, Niall Chandler, but until he rescues her from an overly amorous date, he's never spoken to her. Well things change in a hurry after that night!! Niall acts totally out of character for her and they spend a wild night doing the wild thing!! As a result, Niall comes out of a long freeze she has been in due to a terrible tragedy she suffered. At first their relationship is primarily a sexual one and Vic tends to shy away from wanting to know about the demons that seem to haunt Niall. As they draw closer though, he wants to know more about what she is hiding, but she still isn't ready to bare her soul. When Vic does find out what Niall has been hiding, he is devastated and turns away from her. Niall, though heartbroken, is willing to leave it at that for a while. But she knows what she has lost and later is ready to explain things to Vic, but by that time he doesn't want to hear.

I really enjoyed this book - despite my frequent blushes. At heart, this is a romance and I love all things romance. I did have a few reservations though - not enough to detract me from reading and enjoying Wicked Burn and not enough to keep from getting her next release. The thing that kind of bothered me was about Vic, a very dominant kind of guy - very explicit in what he wants from Niall. Which in itself was fine - example the tie her up scenes. But I would have liked to see Niall get dominant back at him. She just took everything he said and did without a "wait a minute - now it's MY turn!" I really would have liked to see this kind of scene, escpecially after he let her back into his life. As it was, I found her a wee bit of a dormat.

I enjoyed the characters. Vic was a bit overbearing at times - but boy could he do the dirty talk! And Niall was also interesting despite her slight doormat tendancies where Vic was concerned. And I'm very intrigued by her next book, Daring Time - a time travel/ghost story. I have it on my calendar for May.

Grade: 4 out of 5

Kristie! So glad you enjoyed the book. It makes me happy when others enjoy the same books I do :)

While WB was super hawt, I think the strength behind it is definitely the romance, the connection of two people who have experienced loss in different ways and find their way to each other.

Yeah, it would have been exciting to see Niall turn the tables on Vic and become more dominant herself. Maybe the reason she didn't go there is because she has a quieter, more subtle strength, and prefers things just the way they are in the bedroom. Still, that would have been an interesting encounter.

I was really impressed by this book too. I won it on the Book Smugglers and wasn't too sure of it, but wowza, the sex was smokin', wasn't it? :)

I have been hearing great things about this book and it is my next one to read. Ever since I read Beth's books in Ellora's Cave, I knew she would hit the big time.
So Kristie, did you have to keep fanning yourself over and over while you read?

Kristie, your review was so funny I had to step away from my desk!!!

I have this book being shipped to me from Amazon and really looking forward to it.

I had to buy book covers for my trade books on ebay, cuz I could get used to reading these too!

Happy New Year

Kristie,

Thanks for the review of Wicked Burn and the morning smile. Glad you enjoyed it...but I'm sorry you felt so self-conscious about taking it to work! I really love the cover, but perhaps you are right that it doesn't quite fit the content. I told my editor regarding it, 'Well, Vic would never wear a tux, but at least your got Niall's pearls on the cover.' *Grin*
Have a wonderful day.

Ames is reading this right now, what she is saying about it has been itching to read it, too.

The cover is really tame. I'm not shy about what I read, though, I'll a steamy cover anywhere.

Hey Kristie, I'm reading this book right now and I have to agree about the blushes. I mean, I've read hot stuff before, but this book packs a wollop! LOL

I hope to finish it tonight - I'm just at the part when Niall has gone to Meg's for the summer. I can't wait to see what happens. :P

Ames: It does indeed doesn't it? And it must not be just me *g* 'cause I know you love Lora Leigh and to me she writes the steamy scenes. I'll be looking forward to your thoughts on it.

Seneca: I'm still a real rookie when it comes to this kind of genre. And it's only been in the past couple of years that I've really come out of the closet so to speak about my reading tastes. And I really have come a remarkably long way considering how long I've been reading romance. I usually carry two books in purse - one that is 'work' safe and one that is good to read if I get stuck alone in an elevator *g*.
Beth: Thank you so much for stopping by. I might have taken it with me to work except I was just starting that scene. Many of the people I work with are older and some of them a bit on the fuddy duddy side - nice but a bit stiff lipped if you know what I mean. There's one in particular - the stuffiest of the lot - though she is nice and all - who asks the most to see what I'm reading. If she had noticed my eyes bugging out, when I kept reading that scene - not to mention the squirming I probably would have done, she probably would have wanted to read what I was reading. And that might have given her heart palpations or something :-) I do love the cover though. Plus it's a trade size and it might have got squished in my purse - and squished or crinkled books are just not the thing for this book owner. But believe you me, I was barely in the door when I got home, before I was perched on my chair reading!!

Lea: It gets a thumbs up from me so I hope you enjoy it too :)

Cindy: I was laughing when I wrote it - though I'm not sure whether it was what I was writing or what I was drinking that make me so jocular :)

Katie: *laughing* I didn't fan myself, but I sure was warm - even though I keep the heat in the house at 17 degrees Celsius (or 62 degree Farenheit)

Amy: It's worth that extra trip - and I'll be curious to see what you think of it to!!

Bridget: Any book that can make me - a seasoned woman somewhat over 45, 46, 47 etc., blush, is indeed hot (and, um, I'm not really that seasoned -if you know what I mean)

Barbara: Thanks - and dang but those wish lists can get long can't they???

Stacy: I'm glad you liked it and reviewed it!! It opened my eyes - almost bugged open (hah hah hah) I did like those little bits of rebellion she showed - like when she refused to talk to him on the phone - but it would have been interesting to see her turn the table in the bedroom. I figured that dom/sub books will never be for me with that one though.

Kristie - I'm so glad you enjoyed WB! I loved it so much and have actually already re-read it.

I do love that Vic made with the dirty talk. I don't know why, but that works for me with a hero.

But it was a touchingly sweet romance too, wasn't it? I loved how Niall worked through her issues and how Vic was such a guy about having his feelings hurt.

Great, great read!
