Recent Reread

I'm getting an early start on Nath's Reread challenge!!

Lucky's Lady by Tami Hoag

Why this one: I dunno

Steam Level: Hot, sultry, sweltering – just like the setting

Amazon Blurb: As wild and mysterious as the Louisiana swamp he called home, Lucky Doucet was a dangerously attractive Cajun no woman could handle. His solitary life left no room for the likes of elegant Serena Sheridan, but Lucky couldn''t deny her desperate need to find her missing grandfather. He would help her, but nothing more--yet once he felt the lure of the flaxen-haired beauty, an adventurer like Lucky couldn''t help playing with fire.

Serena felt unnerved, aroused, and excited by the ruggedly sensual renegade whose gaze burned her with its heat, but she did not dare tangle with a rebel whose intensity was overwhelming, who claimed his heart was off limits? Deeper and deeper they traveled into the steamy bayou, until with one electrifying kiss her resistance melted into liquid desire. And the devilish rogue found he''d do anything to make Serena Lucky''s Lady.

My thoughts: Tami Hoag has long since left romance and is now writing suspense, but before that she wrote some pretty descent romance and Lucky’s Lady is probably one of the best of the bunch!!

At least I think that’s the case. As I was looking this up at Chapters, it seems some of her books may have some romance in them after all. Perhaps someone could let me know and I can add her back on my list. I followed her for the first few books when she changed genres but as she wrote less and less romance, being the shallow one I am, I enjoyed the books less and less.

Serena Sheridan, a successful physiologist has come home for a visit. And once she gets home, she discovers her beloved but ornery grandfather who raised her and her twin Shelby when their parents died, has disappeared into the bayou in order to evade selling the family home, something her sister is bound and determined is going to happen. Sheridan decides it’s her job to bring him back and in order to do that, she enlists – most reluctantly - Lucky Doucette, a Very Sexy Cajun with attitude.

Now readers – Lucky Doucette for this reader, is just sex on a stick!! He’s arrogant, he’s insufferable at times. He’s obnoxious to the heroine, yet he protects those who live in the bayou. He’s a temperamental artist and he feeds baby raccoons. His bad side is just him trying to keep the world at bay since he is still traumatized from episodes earlier in his life, particularly being held prisoner and tortured in a South American prison when he was in the military. And he’s absolutely delicious!!!

Serena is a great heroine. When we first meet her she comes across as an uptight, no-nonsense head doctor. But within very little time, we see the real Sheridan underneath. She’s passionate, quick with a comeback to Lucky and heartbroken over her rather dysfunctional relationship with her grandfather and sister.

Thrown together by her grandfather’s machinations, she’s reluctantly attracted to Lucky and vice versa. He had an unfortunate relationship years ago with Sheridan’s self-centered twin and for a while thinks Sheridan is just the same kind of person. But it doesn’t take him long to see the difference between sisters. But he’s still reluctant to get involved, thinking he’s just a shell with nothing to offer her.

It’s too bad that Ms. Hoag is concentrating on suspense rather than romance because she can also do romance real well!

It's always nice to re-read a book you enjoyed. Sometimes it's even better the second time around.

Speaking of re-reads, Sioux Spendor is on it's way and I can't wait! Thank you again, Kristie :)

It's really funny, but it was Tami Hoag's later, non romance books that got me turned on to romance not long ago.

I read Dust To Dust and something about the slight romance in that book totally grabbed me and I started reading all of her books for the romantic angle, when up until that point, I only read mystery/suspense. So she totally turned me. LOL

In several of her "non" romance books there is a romance that goes on, although it's not the main focus. And the sex is written quite steamy for main stream. Got me going.

What she's really good at is the jaded/dark/moody hero with the straight laced/cool woman. One of my favorite tropes.

I think Lucky's Lady was one of the ones she wrote in her transition period from romance to suspense and I love it!!! Totally hot. I loved both Lucky and Serena's transformation from their love. It's a good book.

Barbara: I'll be waiting almost as much as you are for it to arrive *g*. And I hope you write about it when you've read it again - and that it lives up to your expectations!

Leah: *laughing* Usually it's the other way around - at least it was for me. I started out with historicals and gradually branched out to other genres and now I love RS.
And funny story about Tami Hoag. My husband and I had totally opposite tastes in books in the later years. He wouldn't have been caught dead reading a romance - he was strictly a Suspense and horror kind of reader. He got most of his books from the library and I saw one time he came home with a couple of Tami Hoag books - her later ones. After he'd read them, I asked what he thought and he had enjoyed them. Then I showed him the ones that we already had sitting on the shelf. They were her suspense ones - Night Sins, Guilty as Sin and another one. I don't think he read her again after that. Romance = blech.

I love this book, it's on my keeper shelf. Her suspense books are great but a little romance thrown in would make them better :)

This is one of the first romances I read and is still one of my favorites!!! ( along with several of Linda Howard's older stuff.)

Kristie (J), this book reminds me of Sandra Brown's Slow Heat in Heaven. It also had a Louisiana bayou setting and a hot as sin Cajun. It's one of my favorites of Sandra Brown when she was writing romance. I have to read Lucky's Lady and see how they compare.

Sotheara: Hello!! And Welcome! I haven't read the Sandra Brown book though I have read a number of her books. I'll have to track it down and do a comparison too!! *g*

Mollie: Isn't it just delish? And Lucky - ooolala - he's a sexy devil isn't he?

Tara Marie!!!!!!! Screeching in excitement. I have missed you. It's so good to see you back again in blog land. I hope you don't disappear on us again for such a long time. I know - RL does get in the way doesn't it? I am pretty tempted to try her again - even if her newer ones do have less romance. She has one coming out that looks like a sequel to an earlier one that I think I just might read.

I never read Tami Hoag but: didn't some of her romances get re-issued? I'll have to check for "Lucky Lady."

"Hot Cajun" made me think of Sandra Hill's "The Love Potion" - one of my first favorite romances. And "Slow Heat in Heaven" is on my list of books to buy since - uhm, very long. :)

Taja: I know Lucky's Lady was reissued. I had a copy and read it years ago. I saw a copy of the original at Walmart (back when they had a GOOD book department) and it made me want to read it again. I searched all over the house for it and couldn't find it so I headed back to Walmart. OF COURSE the original one was gone and all they had were the reissues - at higher prices. But the bug to read it was in me so I got it.
And as for Love Potion - wasn't that one a hoot???? That was the first Sandra Hill book I'd read and I laughed uproarisously through the whole book.

Oh, wow, I've had this one on my wishlist for a long time but never have made the effort to find it. Guess I better go looking. I loved Cash from Slow Heat in Heaven and this hero sounds a lot like him. Great book - you should try it.

This book sounds really good. I just ordered it from PBS. :)

It sounds a lot like Slow Heat in Heaven by Sandra Brown. Did you ever read that one? A very atypical read for me, but one I enjoyed.

Kristie (J) said...

JenB: No, I haven't read Slow Heat - Sotheara mentioned it too. But I will be keeping my eye out for it since it will be interesting to compare the two - and since I loved Lucky's Lady so much.....

Loved Sandra Brown's Slow Heat in Heaven. Lucky's Lady is my least favorite of Tami Hoag, but I'm a huge fan. Two of my favorite authors.

I HHHAAAAATTTTTEEEE that she waited so long to tell him she was pregnant.

I found this book rather flawed. Some of her other stuff is good though.
