Well!! I did it!

On my way home from work tonight I stopped at Chapters and ordered myself a Kobo. Yes - me - who swore I would never get an ereader just a few short years ago, took the plunge.

They didn't have any in stock, but in the next shipment they get, there should be a black one with my name on it. I went for black because I read a review that said the blue buttons on the white ones got dirty to quickly - as good a reason as any to choose the black one I guess. The clerk said it may take as long as 6 weeks, but in reality she said it would probably be much less time then that.

Now I'm really going to have to conquer my fear of small electronic gadgets.

And look! It comes with 100 books already loaded. One of them is a Nicolas Sparks book. It appears I will have to learn how to delete books too!! Or maybe not - I don't see it on the list of 100, although The Communist Manifesto is on it - How Bizarre, How Bizarre, How Bizarre (ear worm!)

I'm sure I'll have lots of fun adventures to come trying to work it. I'm the one who spent 3 hours trying to figure out how to work the DVD player.

I've been trying to see if it has any of those carrying case thingys but I don't see any - at least not at the 'official' web site. But I can get a 'skin'.

And now that I've already ordered and paid for it, does anyone else have one? What do you think? Do you like it? Is it easy to use? Keep in mind that while I was sitting in on the workshop given by Sarah, Jane and Angie, I kept somehow getting 'out' of the book of whichever devise I tried to use and didn't know how to go back. I can tell there will be interesting times ahead.

Nath - you're up now *g*. See, she said she would get one once I did.

oooh, are you gonna do a review? I'd love to know how you like it and what formats you can read on it.

Lucky you!!!

Good stuff Kristie! Keep us updated on your new ebook adventures!

I haven't heard anything from anyone who's bought this, but it's still pretty brand spanking new!

My husband ordered one because he was so jealous of the Sony he got me. It arrived a few days later and he has been very happy with it so far. It is quite easy to use. Their customer service seems pretty good too. Hope you enjoy it!

The free books were mostly public domain classics--so now he's thinking of re-reading Moby Dick.

Congratulations! I have a Sony 700 and I love it. I'm sure you'll master the technology in no time!

LOL, I'm ahead of you, Kristie... I've been looking :D I'm debating between the Sony and the Kobo - although with 150$ difference, hmmmm. Most of the bookstores near me have ran out of Kobo, although yesterday, I saw one at Walmart. I might make the plunge sooner than I thought...

By the way, the first official accessory is coming out this weekend I think... it's some leather pouch designed by Roots. just go on Chapters online, you should find the info.

Congratulations Kristi!! I got the Kindle a year ago and love it!! From the pictures that you have posted the Kobo looks very similar to the Kindle, which is super easy to navigate.

I would have chose black as well. The Kindle only comes in white, but has been pretty good about not getting dirty. LOL

Keep us posted on your adventure with Ereader!

Congrats! I hope you really enjoy it.
I haven't yet gotten a good ereader, but perhaps one of these days. I just love cracking a paperback spine (don't hate me!)and I love the smell of the printed page.
I don't know if I'll ever get into reading ebooks.

:o)

Yay! Hope you enjoy it! I was at B&N last night with my roomie and we were playing with the Nook. We knew more about it than the sales guy :).

When I have some money I'm soooooo getting a Nook.

That'll be awhile though. Sigh.

You'll have to keep us updated on your progress with the Kobo!

Congrats Kristie & almost Nath. I'm anxious to hear what you think. That's the only reason why I don't have one yet. I can't choose - don't know what's the most suitable for us Canucks.

LVLM: Oh, I can already tell there will lots of adventures in eworld - and I shall be happy to share my sure to be many failures and probably few successes.

Ames - I looked at the reviews at Chapters and most seemed to be pretty positive.

Elizabeth: While there are a number I think I'll delete, I was excited to see some of them - like Alice in Wonderland and there are quite a few Austens too!

Kaetrin: *chuckling* Good thing you didn't see me at work today. In my fear of small electronic devices, we have cordless headsets - or rather the kind that fits over your ear, which I hadn't even attempted to use since I got mine - months ago. I decided to tackle it today. I had to get someone to show me how to put the little ear piece that goes on the thing that goes in your ear. And then everyone stared in fascination as I tried to figure out how to fit it onto my right ear with the little speaker piece.
So, *grinning* when you say 'in no time' - well - that makes me smile.

Nath!! So you ARE going to take the plunge. Which one are you going to get??

Heather: I gave Chapters my work number to call when it comes in. I can pass by there on the way home and well - at the moment my home voice mail is full. I'm hoping it comes in Very Soon. Now that I finally broke down, I REALLY want it.

Miss M: *GASP OF HORROR* A spine cracker!! They can feel it you know. If you hold the book up close, you can hear their small cries of pain. And it's not like the snap, crackle, pop you hear when you put your ear close to a bowl of Rice Crispies - or so I tell my sister, also a spine cracker. I'll admit, I'll always love the feel of a book in my hands, but I'm missing so many books by not having an ereader since I just can't read one on the computer.

Mollie: I will indeed keep everyone abreast of my 'challenges' and if I say it's easy - then you HAVE TO KNOW it is :-). I 'played' with a few different devices in the workshop - but they scared me. I didn't want to break them or accidentally delete something.

Mary: I'm thinking the Kobo will be best for us living in Canada. Chapters supports them, plus the price is the best of any.

Yay! I look forward to your observations. Also I LOL'd at the flow of thought between a Sparks book coming pre-loaded and the need to learn to delete things from your new Kobo. :-D

I bought a Sony Pocket Reader last week... love it so far. But admit I keep looking at Kobo

I'm sure you'll love your Kobo. You may end up with smaller bags - not so many books to carry.

A word of warning. You need a GOOD cover. Many people have found a reader does not survive being thrown in a bag with other stuff. The screens are fragile if twisted.

My Hanlin was damaged by a sales assistant banging my bag against a shelf. It was in the supplied cover at the time. For my precious neo I got a book amor case.

I also saw the new cover for the Kobo on the site so there are some 'pretties' to go with it.

I thought we were going to be the 'never, ever, ever' peeps but I have to admit to keeping my eyes open with these readers. I'm waiting for the 'e-reader for dummies' version to come out. My only concern is that I love my paper books and if I buy on an e-reader, would I end up paying twice to then get the paperback.

I'm just saying. My addictions have preferences ;)

Good luck and I hope it comes fast!

I love my sony ereader. I still read paperbacks and hard covers but with the Sony there's a luxury of carrying a library with me and having a number of choices.

Ereaders also make it easier to read ebooks. For all those wonderful writers out there whose books aren't paperback or hardcover, they just became available to you.

Yay Kristie!

I thought I'd never make the adjustment from paperbacks to e-reader, but my wonderful sister bought me a Kindle for my birthday last year, and I LOVE it! I hope you enjoy your new toy!

Lisa: Everyone who has one swears by it. I just hope I'll be another one who swears by it and NOT swears AT it. I'm sure for a while it will be the second one though.

Lori: The idea of being able to carry 1,000 books in one little device is certainly a bonus!! And YES! my reading world will be much wider. And *gulp* isn't that a scary thought considering the post I just posted above this one.

Cindy: Well - I will have Brent with me and he's pretty good at picking these things up. So hopefully it it's as tough for me to figure out as I think it probably will be, I'll have help available. I won't have to read the instructions! I'll have him do it and then he can show me.

Anonymous: Roots here in Canada is the supplier for the covers. I haven't seen them yet - though people tell me they are on the web site. I'll have to check to make sure they are sturdy!!

Sybil: I didn't realize at first that the Kobo was also going to be sold in the US - then I heard Borders would be the supplier for them there. I'll let you know how I love (or hate) mine.

C2: *laughing* It probably does sound very elitist of me - but even though I've never read him (and never will) Nicholas Sparks does not write romance. He writes schmaultz that those not in the know assume is some guy who writes romance. *shudder*
