Connecting with Readers

I enjoyed all the workshops I attended at RT. One in particular I attended came to mind in the past couple of days. While I wasn't that keen on the title of the workshop; Read a Book, Save an Author, I don't think it's our job as readers to save authors, I do have great admiration for them and much appreciation of the hours and hours of enjoyment I get through their work. And I did enjoy the workshop. It was run by Toni Blake and Dakota Cassidy was a last minute replacement for Julie Ann Long who couldn't make it. Also leading the workshop were a couple of publicists.

One point I wanted to make was there is a great, largely untapped opportunity out there for authors, at least in the world of the reader bloggers. To many of us, reading romance is almost a religion *g*. I have no doubt we make some of the greatest fans of authors going. Speaking for myself and I think for others comments and posts I've seen around, we are remarkably loyal to those authors we love. We will keep reading their books even though some of them may not be as enjoyable as others.

What got me thinking about this topic occurred when I happened to be doing some author website surfing the other night and I saw at one author's site a quote I did from one of my Recent Read posts on her book/s. I was thrilled beyond belief and quickly sent a squeeing letter to a number of blogger friends. AND I insisted in this email that they simply had to give her a try - because I said so *g*. One of them wrote back that she went out and got the book. Then the next day I noticed another author had a short quote on a review I had done and again I was excited. That was two in two days!!

I exchanged a few emails with another reader blogger friend. In the exchange of emails, and the point I wanted to make in this post, is us readers are very tickled when an author 'drops' in to visit our blogs. I don't mean it a way of pimping their books, but just dropping in to leave a comment on any old topic. The friend I exchanged emails with had this happen when an author commented on how cute her dog was and she has bought every book this author has come out with since then. I know I would do the same.

If I'm in a book store, looking for something to read and not being sure what, and there is a book on the shelf by an author who has stopped by here, you can bet that will be the one I'll pick up to take home with me. I've also noticed Ramblings on Romance listed on sidebars of a few author blogs and that's another factor that will cause me take their book home. I get such a rush when I see that.

When I made this point in the workshop, about how thrilled we readers are when authors drop by and how very likely it is that when that happens and we see one of their books in the store, we will buy it, knowing the author took time to visit us, it was brought up that some authors aren't sure how welcome they would be. While I can't speak for EVERY reader blogger, still I think the odds are very good, that the authors are very welcome.

It's hard to put into words my feelings on authors. I know I hold them in high esteem unless they prove to be total dickwads. They do something I wish I could do. They create people and stories that entertain me ever so much more than most television shows or movies. I even appreciate authors whose books I don't read. At least they are doing something they love - I would think you would have to love it to be an author. The vast majority of them aren't getting all that rich in their chosen careers I think. I think the closest I can come to the feeling, is the way I felt about the kids teachers. It was a job I couldn't do and by the very nature of it they earned my respect.

And also, in most cases, before they were writers, authors were and are still readers. With that fact in mind, it makes them very welcome visitors here.

And I'm curious. Do you like having authors dropping in and joining on discussions? Would it have any effect when you're shopping for books? Or would you rather they stay away? I'm talking general discussions, not discussions on their own particular book.

So when an author drops by I get a real thrill that they 'visit' me.

Two Paranormal and Fantasy Authors You Should Read

I have noticed something interesting about the newest releases for November. There seems to be quite a few paranormal and fantasy romances on the market, perhaps now more than ever. Everyone has been talking and raving lately about Kresley Cole and Kathryn Smith's newest paranormals, which I also want to read, but there are two other authors I would recommend also this month that fall under great Paranormal and Fantasy reads.

CL Wilson's sequel to Lord of the Fading Lands is a MUST. I was very lucky enough to read her first book in this new fantasy series to back in September for review and the same went for Lady of Light and Shadows a month later. I honestly can say the Wilson is a true star in the Fantasy genre. She is the author to watch for 2008. As Christine Feehan's former critque partrner, Wilson has a wonderful and imaginative voice. She has come up with a wonderful world of mystical creatures and an incredible love story that should not be missed. I whole heartily recommend you first read Lord of the Fading Lands and then Lady of Light and Shadows. I already have "pimped" these two books out to anyone who loves to read in general. Plus CL Wilson's website has a ton of praise from authors and other reviewers from all over the web. You may also see a familar name there praising these two books **cough cough**. And she is busy at work writing the third and fourth book in this on-going series. YIPPY!

Another author I found out because of a review I had to do was the funny, so much so my stomach hurt Immortal Sexy Series by Stephanie Rowe. Sex and the Immortal Bad Boy is the fourth in this series about the afterlife, Heaven and most importantly Satan and his minions in Hell. Actually evil was never so fun to read! Satan is a hoot. Rowe made me love Satan. Satan is portayed as a sex maniac who only cares about getting laid all the time, and of course torturing others. Even though each one of Rowe's Immortal books have a hero and a heroine, Satan is the star of all these books. After reading Sex and the Immortal Bad Boy, I had to go back and read her whole backlist. And let me tell, you this whole series should be on your keeper shelf. They are funny, sexy and cute reads! Death and mayhem reign supreme with immortal dragons, the goblet of eternal youth who likes to be tupperware and Satan's minions who want to find love and stay out of Hell. Plus Satan is depressed because the love of his life won't be with him to enjoy his manly parts and love. And he melts whenever sprayed with water.

And from what I hear, the paranormal and fantasy romance genre will be stronger than ever. And I am not just talking about vampires and immortal guardians. Apprantly publishers are looking for authors who can come up with "out of the box" paranormals that are sexy and either funny and deep and dark. It seems CL Wilson and Stephanie Rowe are on the right track. I for one have been enjoying these types of books much more lately and I can't wait to see what 2008 has in store for ghouls, goblins and because I am still addicted to them, those dead sexy men called vampires.
And don't forget a certain author's book that comes out in February about Angels and Demons! (I know for a fact it will be one of the best reads next year and will blow all other books out of the water. Can you guess who?)

Mid-List Authors I enjoy

Well, I shared a couple of debut authors whose books I really enjoyed. Today it’s a couple of mid-list authors.

Susan Mallery has been an autobuy author for me for ages but she is someone I very rarely see mentioned on message boards. I started reading her harlequins, the hometown heartbreaker series, many years ago and really liked them. Then she began writing single titles and I liked them even more. She wrote a trilogy a couple of years ago about threes sisters, The Sparkling One, The Sassy One and The Seductive One, whose family owned a vineyard. I thought these were pretty good stories but they seemed to generate very little buzz. After that, she wrote a wonderful story, Someone Like You. This is a coming home story and rediscovering your first love. The sequel, published in March/05, Looking for Gracie, is another wonderful story with the same theme. Gracie had become a town legend in her youth in her pursuit of Riley, the hero who had left town years ago. Gracie and Riley just happen to show up back in town years later. This book I gave 4 out 5
She also has written some westerns that I thoroughly enjoyed under the pen name Susan Macias.
I haven’t been reading her latest Harlequins; they are those dreaded Sheik and Heiress books, but I really recommend her singles titles, her older harlequins and her westerns. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. I’d love to see more readers discover her books.

Michele Albert is an author I have loved since her first book Absolute Trouble. This was written under the name Michele Jerrott and this one got me from the very start. The hero, Luc, is posing as a male stripper in order to avenge the death of his brother. He is sent to stay with Dulcie, a former cop who had to leave the force on a disability. I knew right from the beginning that this was an author I was going to love. And I have, all of her books. Although I had been thinking of doing this kind of promotion ever since I started blogging, it was a blog about the issues of being a mid list author she wrote that I read via Maili that really prompted me to begin. When she switched her pen name to Albert, much to my dismay, none of the bookstores where I lived carried her book, Getting Her Man. Because I love her books, I specially ordered this one, something I don’t do that often. Although I think all her books are great, my favourite ones are Absolute Trouble and Off Limits. I rated both of them 5 out of 5. So for anyone looking for great contemporaries, great heroes and heroines I urge you to take the time to read Michele Albert.

In praise of new and mid-list authors

I have mentioned a number of times and in a number of different places, how much success I have had in the past year and a half with debut and mid-list authors.
I have read quite a bit about the sorry state of romance today and I just haven’t found this to be the case at all when it comes to new and mid-list authors.
So, putting my money where my mouth is, I want start featuring different gems I have found and why they are gems.

Debut Authors

Kate Rothwell debuted in 2004 with her book Somebody Wonderful. The story takes place in the 1880’s in New York City. The hero is an Irish police officer and the heroine is a rich heiress. This book has a great location and a great time period. I wish there were more Americana books like this. Both the hero, Michael McMann and the heroine, Timona Calverson are wonderful characters, both likeable. What I liked about Timona is she decided she wanted Mick and she went out and got him. I rated this one a 4 out of 5
Her follow-up book, Somebody To Love starred Griffin Calverson, Timona’s rather stuffy brother and Araminta Woodhall her best friend. This book was very unique in that there was a mixed relationship between the hero/heroine. I enjoyed this book even more and rated it 5 out of 5. Kudos to Kate Rothwell.

Paula Reed also debuted in 2004. Her first book, Into His Arms features Faith Cooper as young Quaker woman who is questioning her faith when she is being forced to marry a man she doesn’t want to. She stows away on the ship of Privateer Geoffrey Hampton. Not a shy young miss was this one. I rated this one 4 ½ out of 5.
Her follow up book, For Her Love deals with the issue of slavery and again kudos to Paula Reed for the risks she takes. The hero is Giles Courtney, the second in command from Into His Arms. He decides it’s time to settle down and Grace Welbourne, the daughter of a rich plantation owner is the woman he wants to marry. She is not what she seems however. I gave this book 4 ½ out of 5.

I will continue to share more about authors and their books that convince me that the future of romance seems to be doing quite well in future blogs.
For those who question, where romance is headed, I strongly encourage you to take a chance and try new and mid-list authors. I think you will be very pleased!
